Open-Air Cold Plasma Device Leads to Selective Tumor Cell Cytotoxicity

The need for effective and safe therapies cancer is growing as aging modifying its epidemiology. Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) has gained attention a potential anti-tumor therapy. CAP gas with enough energy to ionize significant fraction of constituent particles, forming equal numbers positive ions electrons. Timely-resolved output voltage measurement, emission spectroscopy, quantification reactive species (RS) in plasma-activated media (PAM) were performed characterize the physical chemical properties plasma. To assess cytotoxicity cold human tumors, different cell lines cultured, plated, exposed CAP, followed by MTT SRB colorimetric assays 24 h later. Human fibroblasts, phenotypically normal cells, processed similarly. Plasma was higher cells breast cancer, urinary bladder osteosarcoma, lung melanoma, endometrial cancer. Cytotoxicity time-dependent possibly related increased production hydrogen peroxide medium. Sixty seconds exposure renders selective effects, preserving viability fibroblast cells. These results point importance conducting further studies therapy
